The Border Policemen of the Southern Regional Directorate registered the biggest catch of the cigarettes in the area of responsibility this year. More than 840,000 cigarettes of different trademarks were raised, the case is currently investigated by the officers of the criminal investigation of the Border Police.
The contraband goods were found in the proximity of the state border, 50 m from the river Prut, at the direction of the localities Cahul - Slobozia Oancea, following the getting of the operative information, held at the institution level. On the spot the border policemen found dozens of bags where were packed over 42,000 packs of cigarettes, and a rubber boat with the help of which the cigarettes were to be transported across the river Prut.
The tobacco products were estimated at over 400 thousand MDL, at the present moment the border policemen undertake all investigative activities in order to identify the persons involved and establish all criminal area. On the respective case it was initiated a criminal case under Art. 248 Smuggling in large proportions, which provides punishment with imprisonment from 3-10 years.
