Border policemen discovered on the banks of the river Prut 40,000 contraband cigarettes and detained four persons who wanted to smuggle cigarettes into Romania.
At around 1.15, due to exploitation of intelligence data, Border Police Sector Leuşeni inspectors were mobilized for the detection of suspicious involved persons and transmission of illegal tobacco products across the state border.
As a result, at 50 meters from the River Prut were observed and detained two men. Initially, the individuals could not justify their presence in the area and later admitted that they were close to the border in order to monitor all actions of the Border Patrol Police and to notify both their colleagues, as well as unknown persons in Romania, with whom they previously had arrangements to receive packages of cigarettes.
After two hours, at the place of detention approached two suspects who had with them parcels wrapped in black foil. The packages were confiscated, and the persons involved were taken to the Sector Leuseni for further investigations.
The preliminary investigation established that the young persons were Moldovan citizens, aged between 21 and 25 years, residents of Calarasi and Dubasari. From their statements it was found that the four parcels belonged to them and were to arrive in neighboring country to be sold and to get a profit. At the inventories were discovered 40,000 cigarettes, of brand Rothmans, whose value was estimated at over 20,000 MDL.
Currently, the investigation officers of the Border Police investigate the case under the aspect of committing the offense of smuggling, at the end should be taken legal measures.
